Prinny's Birthday Flash Exchange

The Prince Regent's birthday is August 12, and we all get presents! Welcome to the second biennial* Prince Regent's Birthday Regency/Victorian Flash Exchange (a.k.a. PrinnyFlash), for works set in (an approximation of) Great Britain or the British Empire between 1811 and 1901.

* I meant to run it last year, but you know, things happen.

What counts as "Regency" and "Victorian"?
For the purposes of this exchange, "Regency" means 1811–1830 (the Regency + the reign of King George IV) and "Victorian" means 1830–1901 (the reigns of King William IV and Queen Victoria). HOWEVER, we're primarily here to have fun with 19th-century fandoms, people, and tropes. Strict historical accuracy is not required, expected, or guaranteed for any work in this exchange. Anywhere the rules say "an approximation of," they are inclusive of alternate Regency/Victorian eras, romance novels set in an idealized Regency era, steampunk, and other deviations from history.

If you're not sure, please consult this list. This is a flash exchange, so the mods won't be policing this too closely.

General Rules

Each participant will produce:

a complete fic in English of at least 300 words

for one of their recipient's requested combinations of fandom + character/relationship

set in (an approximation of) Great Britain or the British Empire between 1811 and 1901

that does not contain the recipient's DNWs for that request, and does not contain any opt-ins that the recipient did not opt into for that request

Exchange matching is for fic only. Please indicate in your signup if you're open to treats in other mediums (art, podfic, fanvid, etc.).

Flash exchange expectations apply:

No one is guaranteed a gift, but we'll do our best to find pinch hitters for anyone who defaults. Generous treating is encouraged. (Treats must be for one of the recipient's requested combinations of fandom + character/relationship and must not contain the recipient's DNWs for that request.)

The collection will open on time even if not everyone has a gift.

Signups with unmatchable offers will be deleted. Please check the requests and make sure you're offering at least one thing that at least one person has requested.

Well-behaved socks are welcome; if you use a sock please let the mods know so we don't assign you to write for yourself.

We're here to have fun. Please do your best to write something your recipient will like, and to leave kudos and appreciative comments on your gift(s).

That said, optional details (including freeforms) are optional. Prompts and freeforms may guide your writer, but please be open to getting something gloriously unexpected.

Strict historical accuracy is not required, expected, or guaranteed for any work in this exchange.

Works that primarily take place in (an approximation of) Great Britain or the British Empire between 1811 and 1901

Famous real people who primarily lived or worked in Great Britain or the British Empire between 1811 and 1901

Any other fandom, with the understanding that any fic for that fandom must be set in (an approximation of) Great Britain or the British Empire between 1811 and 1901

Crossovers of the above

Regency or Victorian original work

Please do not nominate "All Media Types" fandoms without mod approval.

Characters and Relationships

All nominations must be disambiguated, using the canonical fandom name if possible.

RPF limitations: No non-famous family members of 20th/21st-century famous people. No living people under 18. No 20th/21st-century Nazis, fascists, or white supremacists.

All characters and relationships will be put in the Relationship field.

Crossovers

There will be one "fandom" called Crossover Fandom. Crossover relationships can be nominated within it. Each individual character should be disambiguated (abbreviated canon names are fine).

Original Work

There will be two "fandoms" called Regency Original Work and Victorian Original Work. Trope-style characters and relationships can be nominated within them.

Please preface nominations with: 1 (for solo characters), FF, MM, FM, Multi, Other. Specifying genders for 1, Multi, and Other nominations is welcome but not required. If you have a two-person ship where one or both genders aren't binary F or M or aren't specified, put it under Other. Please use Multi for all ships of more than two people even if they are all the same gender. Since many nominations may be appropriate for both Regency and Victorian, please disambiguate with ROW or VOW.

The request section of your sign-up must include:

3 to 10 fandom requests

a minimum of 3 unique fandoms (after that requirement is met, fandoms can be repeated)

1 to 20 characters/ships in each request

It may optionally include:

up to 20 freeforms in each request, or "Any" (which means "any nominated freeform," not "any AO3 tag")

likes and/or prompts for each request

indication of whether you're open to treats in other mediums (such as art, podfic, or fanvids)

a list of any exchange opt-ins that you opt into

up to 5 DNWs per request that are specific and don't conflict with the request or otherwise box your writer in

a link to an exchange letter or likes list

DNWs
A DNW is a thing you Do Not Want to get in a fic. This exchange permits up to five DNWs listed in your sign-up. DNWs can be different from one request to the next, and can be general ("DNW slurs and name-calling") or specific to a canon or request ("DNW Harry/Draco").

Your DNW list does not need to explain why you don't want something. Please don't use your DNWs to disparage something that someone else may be into. DNWs that create an impossible request, such as "DNW incest" for an incest ship, and DNWs that are vague or difficult to understand, such as "DNW yucky stuff," will be disregarded.

If you DNW any of the opt-ins, you don't need to list them in your DNWs, and they aren't counted toward your limit of five; they are assumed as global DNWs by default, unless a sign-up contradicts that.

Example useful DNWs:

"DNW frogs" for a fandom that doesn't have frogs in it

"DNW non-canonical character death"

Example non-useful DNWs:

"DNW turtles" for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles -- makes request impossible

"DNW anything triggering" -- too vague

"DNW gross foods like tomatoes" -- disparaging

Requesting Regency/Victorian Fandoms and Persons
Fics for fandoms or real people that are inherently Regency or Victorian will be in the canon setting by default. However, you can use prompts or freeforms to indicate being open to something else that would meet the setting requirement, such as post-canon fic that brings Regency characters into the Victorian era, time travel fic, or a Regency AU of a Victorian canon or vice versa.

Requesting Non-Regency/Victorian Fandoms and Persons
Fics for fandoms or real people that aren't inherently Regency or Victorian, or crossovers involving one or more of those fandoms or people, still need to meet the setting requirement. This is most commonly done through time travel or a Regency or Victorian AU. If you request one of these fandoms or crossovers, you may not DNW time travel or Regency/Victorian AUs for that request.

The offer section of your sign-up must include:

3 to 10 fandom offers

a minimum of 3 unique fandoms

1 to 20 characters/ships in each offer, or "Any" (which means "any nominated character/ship for this fandom," not "any character/ship at all for this fandom")

Writing (and Otherwise Creating)

All works must be set in (an approximation of) Great Britain or the British Empire between 1811 and 1901.

Works for fandoms or real people that are inherently Regency or Victorian must be set in the canon setting unless the recipient indicates openness to another option that would still meet the setting requirement.

Works for fandoms or real people that are not inherently Regency or Victorian can meet the setting requirement through time travel, AU, requested crossovers, or whatever ingenious means your mind devises.

Assignment-fulfilling stories must be in English and at least 300 words long. There is no wordcount minimum or language requirement for written treats. (Treating in a language your recipient can read is strongly encouraged.)

There are no requirements for other mediums. Please check what kind of treats someone is open to before treating.

Opt-ins and DNWs apply to all mediums. Please keep the opt-in list handy and check your work against it before posting.
